Over the Pill?

She is 42-years-old, but is noticing issues with vaginal dryness and looseness. Is it the result of a change in birth control, or something else? She wants to continue taking birth control, but wants to lose this issue of dryness and looseness. What can she do?

Case #: 1594

Concern:

I'm a 42-year-old woman and I have one thing that I like more than anything: sex! However, I have noticed that lately sex doesn't feel the same. My partner tells me that I am loose and dry, but I don't know. Could my birth control have anything to do with it? I recently changed it because it was giving me high blood pressure. I know that one of the side effects of birth control is vaginal dryness, but is there any way I can be taking birth control and also get rid of this dryness? Please help me.

Discussion:

It seems that switching birth controls has caused an issue to come to the forefront that you might have already begun without noticing: menopause. It’s likely that the birth control you were taking was blunting the effects of this change of life, but the new hormonal mix you’re on isn’t cutting the mustard, so to speak, and you’re left high and dry, pun intended.

Keep On the Pill

You can certainly continue taking your current birth control; in fact, I would recommend it! If you’re having issues with vaginal dryness and looseness, it sounds like your body is low on estrogen. This occurs naturally around this time; during menopause, sex hormone production for women begins to drop off. Your last birth control might have had high enough levels of estrogen to counteract this effect, but estrogen can negatively impact blood pressure, so it’s likely that the new one contains significantly less. And there’s your problem!

Finding Balance

To fix this, you must increase the levels of estrogen within your body, without actually ingesting more estrogen. This isn’t such a conundrum as it sounds. There are many plants that naturally contain estrogen mimickers, and these can be ingested in the place of actual estrogen. Because they are plant derived, they don’t stick around in the body to cause problems.

These chemicals are known as phytoestrogens, and are found in high concentrations in soy, legumes, and beans, but highest of all in flax seeds. Many herbs also contain these compounds, and taking an herbal supplement that features a selection of these herbs, and other herbs that balance hormone levels, can ease much of the suffering associated with menopause.

Herbal Hormonal Help

The remedy I have in mind for you contains Rehmannia, a powerful hormone production initiator, as well as a selection of phytoestrogenic plants. (SEE: Natural Herbal Formula for Vaginal Dryness Relief) You will soon notice improved vaginal tone and lubrication after beginning this formula. However, there is one more tip I have for you as far as vaginal tone is concerned.

A Physical Payoff

Kegel exercises are a great way to regain the vaginal tension you and your lover are accustomed to. They’re easy to perform, and improve sex for both male and female. Kegels strengthen your pubococcygeus muscles, giving you better grip during sex, and stronger orgasms due to improved contractions. You can do them at any time, simply by contracting, holding, and then releasing specific muscles. Mayo Clinic has an excellent article on how to perform Kegels that would surely benefit you to read.

I hope these suggestions improve your sex life. You’re too young to be all used up!
